About the Book
Psyker Marine: Book 5 is the book where the series’ central reveal stops being deferred. By now the squad isn’t the squad it started as; the Aetherion aren’t the saviours they advertised; and the protagonist’s build is doing things that weren’t in the brochure.
The book sets up Book 6’s finale while standing on its own as the largest engagement of the series so far. Combat is brutal; the consequences stick.
The Story
Thorne is a Level 25 Psyker Apex now and he is coming back from a catastrophic battle on Rithos, stranded deep in a hostile jungle full of things that want to eat him. Darius Cylis is dead, the Crusade is shattered, and Emperor Arkanar’s forces are hunting what is left of the team. Mana is running low, health is critical, and in this jungle even the shadows deal damage. He intends to survive the jungle, survive the Emperor, and go down anything but quietly, because Marines don’t die easy. They come back meaner.
It is the shortest book in the series and the tightest, one long fighting retreat with the stakes at their highest so far. One reviewer reached for Heart of Darkness for the jungle sections, which is about right, and the new levels are the biggest jumps in the run.
